Colophon Cafe

Setting the stage
I had recently been told by my new coworker, Julie, that the French Dip at Colophon Cafe in Bellingham, a short drive from my place, was an excellent one: her son's favorite. Her college-aged son, name TBD, was living in Bellingham and going to my alma mater, Western Washington University, there. It is definitely fun and inspiring to know of people with common tastes (no pun) in food groups and schools. So I was compelled.
It was late on a Friday afternoon and I'd wrapped up work for the week. I'd also just gotten paid my sign-on bonus so I was feeling grateful and motivated. I wanted to get out of the house, so decided that a "date night" with myself was a good option. I put on my new favorite sneakers and headed out, after feeding the birds from my new 40-lb. bag of seed with my new bird seed scoop and dispenser.
The weather was lovely and it even felt a bit like summer to me, although it was only mid-Spring. I cruised up Chuckanut Drive to Colophon Cafe, enjoyed a nice dinner sitting out on their patio, then ran back down I-5 to Burlington to catch the new Nicolas Cage movie, "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent", at 7:10. It all worked out well and here I am on Saturday morning writing up my review. Do I even write them anymore or do I assemble them? Anyways, here goes.
Place
Outside seating
Nice to have with the weather I had.
Inside
Looks like a big place but I was happy to be outside.
Service
Was pretty good overall. Slow at times. Everyone was friendly.
No salt and pepper on my table
Wanted some pepper for my salad and couldn't flag anyone down.
Ordering
Choices
I loved that they provided me with options for traditional (beef), turkey and vegetarian (portabella mushroom) as the "meat" of their French Dip sandwich. I asked for the "whole" size and for 1/2 of it beef and 1/2 of it portabella mushroom. They were indeed able to accommodate this request for a $2 up-charge that they did not disclose. The price was indeed expensive but I don't really care these days; it's a meal, hobby and passion.
Undisclosed Upcharge

Weather
The sun came out more while I sat there. It was peaceful and in some ways "busy" for Bellingham. There were a couple of different sets of parents with kids playing in the park. It felt great to be out and about and enjoying food, wine outdoors. It was warm enough, too, and no wind either.
Park scene was pretty nice.
Food and drink
Food
Plating and presentation
Looked great when served. I liked the color of the jus cup.
Jus Cup Color
Kind of a teal.
Side salad
Bleu cheese
Was not overly delicious to me but was indeed fresh and of pretty high quality.
Greens
High quality.
Flavor
Just not all that delicious.
Carrot ribbons
Nice, fancy touch.
Croutons
Looked homemade.
Could have used a little diced red onion or kalamata, perhaps.
French Dip
Sandwich
Bread
Looks nice in presentation. Clearly buttered and toasted.
Nice cornmeal crunch and looks homemade.
Red skewers.
Cheese
Was not overly prominent. And I actually liked that.
Portabello half
Great. Excellent really. Onions really add something. They have a perfectly nice texture. Al dente.
Beef half
More substantial than the mushroom side.
Beef
Good and good amount. High quality onions and bread probably make this thing.
Jus
Good. Smooth.
Indeed a score of five overall. Super high quality and thought going into this fine feast.
Wine
I ordered a pinot grigio off the happy hour menu just in time.
Pinot grigio
Taste
Ok but was not my favorite.
Served cold.
Pour
The waitress said that she hooked me up with a bigger-than-normal pour (the rest of the bottle).
Water
They provide a chilled carafe and a small plastic glass.
Glass
Didn't seem nice or fancy.
Carafe
At least the water looked cold/chilled.
No Ice
I definitely prefer ice with my water.

Sitting upstairs at my place realizing that "it was on" for me to go to Colophon Cafe.
Thinking of the word "masturdate" for "I'm going out with myself" then realizing I didn't coin it. Oh well, kind of funny.
One of my new shoes. Topo brand.
My new bird "Seed Scoop". Maybe not as big as I'd want.
Size
Novelty
Advanced Features
Has a hand-operated "valve" to release the seed!

Really quite good for a stock system.
Flakiness of Back-up Camera and Screen
Some glitch happening here.
Thinking it would be cool to get some sort of head-mounted camera that can take good pics and interface with my smartphone.
Like this one looks pretty cool:

I have the idea of "Mixed Digital Media" as my skill set. It excited me but it's not really a thing.

The AMC theater in Burlington.
Quality
Still the old cinema it ever was.
Seating
Not as nice as stuff you get closer to Seattle.
AMC App

Movie
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
I liked it quite a bit. Nick was funny and Pedro Pascal was good, too. They're a quirky bunch together but really quite funny. The movie kept you guessing and wondering and was very tongue-and-cheek.
Closing
Was a really fun night "out" with myself and the movie was good. Now to tell Julie of my adventure.
